Foreign graduates are female or male students who are nationals of another country (not Germany) or have no nationality (stateless) and who successfully completed a course of studies at a German higher education institution and gained a final degree in a specific subject.
It is possible to differentiate between two categories of foreign graduates, namely Bildungsauslaender graduates and Bildungsinlaender graduates.

The data on graduates were recorded and analysed for each graduation year, because students can generally take their finals in the summer semester and in the winter semester. A graduation year covers the winter semester and the subsequent summer semester.
