Foreign student drop-outs are male or female foreign first-year students enrolled in a first degree course who fail to successfully complete their studies, i.e. who fail to pass a final examination at a German higher education institution.
The available data make it difficult to determine the student drop-out rate as a proportion of first-year students among a specific age cohort who fail to graduate as planned in Germany, and so can only be given as an approximate value.
It is possible to differentiate between two categories of foreign student drop-outs, namely male or female Bildungsauslaender student drop-outs and Bildungsinlaender student drop-outs. It is estimated that around half the Bildungsauslaender first-year students taking a first degree course at a higher education institution discontinue/drop out from their studies.
