Students enrolled at German higher education institutions are fundamentally entitled to change their subject, regardless of how far the respective studies in any specific subject have progressed.
A change of subject takes place when a student continues his or her studies in another subject or when, while retaining the subject, the student studies for another degree, e.g. instead of for a Diplom degree in physics for a Lehramt (teaching) degree in physics in combination with other subjects. In the case of contentually related degree programmes (combination of subject and degree), full study periods completed in the previous degree programme are often recognised in the new programme. The respective higher education institution decides this on a case-by-case basis.
