Erasmus participants from Germany by type of university since 2016

The number of annual Erasmus visits by students to all universities in Germany rose from 40,389 to 50,934 between the calendar years 2016 and 2024. This represents an increase of 26% over this period.

In 2022, following the sharp decline in participant numbers in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the number of Erasmus participants not only returned to the pre-pandemic level of the 2019 funding year but also exceeded it. In 2024, a new record high of 50,934 Erasmus participants was reached. At universities of applied sciences (UAS), the number of Erasmus participants has risen more sharply since 2016 (+41%) than at universities (+20%). Compared with the previous year, too, the increase in numbers at universities (2%) was significantly smaller than at UAS (9%). This has resulted in a steady rise in the share of Erasmus placements undertaken at UAS – in 2016, 28% of Erasmus participants were at UAS, whereas in 2024 the figure was 31%.
