International academics and researchers at public universities and research institutes in major host countries
As part of the Wissenschaft weltoffen project, research was conducted on (employed) international academic staff at public universities and research institutions in key host countries.
Looking at the 15 host countries for which data could be obtained for 2022, the United States is by far the most important host country, with around 90,900 international academics at its universities. It is followed by Germany (79,700), the United Kingdom (74,100), Switzerland (32,700), France (18,500) and Austria (15,000). Furthermore, there were 10,145 in the Netherlands, 9,667 in Japan, 6,675 in Sweden, 6,242 in Spain, 6,021 in South Korea, 5,559 in Finland, 3,132 in Turkey, 3,047 in Italy and 1,688 in Portugal.
