International students in Germany by type of university and key countries of origin since the 2013/14 winter semester

In the winter semester of 2024/25, the number of international students at universities in Germany rose further. Around 402,100 international students were enrolled in Germany at that time. That is around 6 percent more than in the winter semester of 2023/24. They accounted for 14 percent of all students in Germany.
During the same period, the number rose from 258,247 to 270,357 at universities and from 121,692 to 131,726 at universities of applied sciences.
Among the key countries of origin, the number of students from India rose from 49,008 in the 2023/24 winter semester to 58,833 in the 2024/25 winter semester. The number of students from China fell slightly from 38,687 to 38,580, while the number from Turkey rose from 18,084 to 20,900, from Iran from 15,159 to 17,248 and from Austria from 15,379 to 15,732.
