Key flows of international student mobility in 2022
According to UNESCO, around 6.9 million students were enrolled outside their home country in 2022.
The ten most important flows of international student mobility are from China to the United States with 284,857 students, from China to the United Kingdom with 172,555 students, from India to the United States with 150,001 students, from India to the United Kingdom with 126,090 students, from India to Canada with 104,937 students, from China to Australia with 97,507 students, from China to Japan with 96,707 students, from China to Canada with 76,044 students, from India to Australia with 69,235 students, and from China to South Korea with 60,551 students.
Germany attracts a large influx of students from China (38,903) and India (34,027), while Germany sends 36,430 students to Austria and 25,179 to the Netherlands.
The top five host countries with the most incoming international students are the United States with 873,576, the United Kingdom with 674,931, Germany with 403,473, Australia with 382,007 and Russia with 340,326 international students.
The top five countries of origin with the most outgoing international students are China, including Hong Kong and Macao, with 1,021,814, India with 631,075, Uzbekistan with 141,001, Vietnam with 134,332 and Germany with 126,944 international students.
