German students in selected host countries by type of degree

Just under half of the German students abroad (49%) are pursuing a bachelor’s degree and more than a third (38%) a master’s degree. Another 12% are pursuing a doctorate abroad, while other types of degrees account for 1% of students. Compared to German students at German universities, master’s students abroad are significantly overrepresented, while bachelor’s students are noticeably underrepresented.

There are also different distributions in the types of degrees sought in the host countries. For example, in the Netherlands, Turkey, Greece, Canada and Japan, well over 50% of German students are pursuing a bachelor’s degree. In Central and Eastern European countries such as Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Poland and Latvia, on the other hand, more than three-quarters of Germans study in master’s degree programmes.
