Major flows of international student mobility 2018

According to UNESCO, around 5.6 million students were enrolled outside their home country in 2018. This represents an increase of around 240,000 students abroad or 4% compared to the previous year.

The largest flows of international student mobility are from China, by far the most important country of origin, to the host countries US, Australia, United Kingdom and Japan. In total, around 986,000 students from China were enrolled at universities abroad in 2018. This alone represents 18% of all mobile students worldwide.

Within Europe, the main student flows are from Germany to Austria (29,000) and the Netherlands (23,000), from Ukraine to Poland (27,000) and from Slovakia to the Czech Republic (22,000).
