Major flows of international student mobility 2019

According to UNESCO, around 6.1 million students were enrolled outside their home country in 2019. This represents an increase of around 380,000 international students or 6% compared to the previous year.

The largest flows of international student mobility are from China, by far the most important country of origin, to the host countries of the US, Australia, the United Kingdom and Japan. In total, around 1,062,000 students from China were enrolled at higher education institutions abroad in 2019. This alone represents around 18% of all mobile students worldwide.

Within Europe, the main student flows are from Germany to Austria (29,000), from Ukraine to Poland (27,000), from Germany to the Netherlands (21,000), and from France to Belgium (15,000).
