Standard and non-standard Erasmus visits completed by students from Germany by type of visit beginning between July 2020 and May 2021

Since July 2020, the Erasmus statistics have also included and differentiated stays which, due to the Covid 19 pandemic, could not be carried out regularly, i.e. not in the previously usual face-to-face form. These are, on the one hand, stays that are partially or completely carried out digitally (from the home or host country) and, on the other hand, stays that have to be interrupted or shortened or cannot take place at all or are postponed.

Accordingly, more than 20,000 regular stays took place between July 2020 and May 2021 despite the Covid 19 pandemic. That is 55% of the stays that were approved in this period. Around 15,000 approved stays in this period (41%) could not take place or had to be shortened or cancelled. Just under 900 stays (1.5%) were purely virtual, i.e. without a physical stay in the respective host country, and a good 500 cases were hybrid stays, i.e. the Erasmus phase took place partly digitally (from the home or host country) and partly on-site at the host institution abroad.
