Funded visits abroad undertaken by guest researchers from Germany by host region and funding organisation in 2023
According to the annual DZHW survey of funding organisations, Western Europe was once again the most important host region for visiting scholars from Germany in 2023. 31 percent of the recorded visits took place in Western European countries. Other significant host regions were North America (around 17 percent), Asia and Pacific (15 percent) and Central and South-Eastern Europe (14 percent). More than three quarters (76 percent) of all funded stays took place in the four host regions mentioned above. Less frequently chosen host regions were Latin America, North Africa and Middle East (7 percent each), sub-Saharan Africa (5 percent) and Eastern Europe and Central Asia (4 percent).
Individual funding organisations are characterised by regional funding priorities. For example, in 2023, the DFG mainly funded guest stays in North America (52 percent) and Western Europe (39 percent). The AvH also facilitated many guest stays in North America (41 percent) and Western Europe (31 percent), but also in the Asia-Pacific region (18 percent). The DAAD also supported many stays abroad in the three guest regions mentioned, but pursued a more balanced regional funding policy overall. The other German funding organisations supported guest stays in Western Europe (61 percent) and North America (14 percent) in particular, while the foreign funding organisations considered here supported stays in the Asia-Pacific region (almost 78 percent) and North America (18 percent).
