International academic staff at universities in Germany by region and countries of origin in 2024
In 2024, the number of international academics and researchers at universities in Germany stood at around 68,300, including some 4,200 international professors.
Of the total international academic staff, 28% came from Western Europe, 23% from Asia and the Pacific, and 15% from Central and Southeastern Europe. The main country of origin was India, accounting for 10% of the total international academic staff. This was followed by China (just under 8%), Italy (7%), Iran and Austria (5% each).
Among international professors, 61% came from Western Europe, 13% from Central and Southeastern Europe, and 8% from North America. Looking at their countries of origin, the largest share, 19%, came from Austria, 9% from Italy, 8% from Switzerland, 7% from the US, and 6% from the Netherlands.
